Gemiler and the coast south
You'll leave Fethiye for Gemiler Island, where Byzantine churches are linked by a long processional way up the slope. Butterfly Valley, a short run south, is a day stop, with a path from the beach up into the gorge. Nearby Soğuksu, Turkish for cold water, lives up to its name, with cold springs in the bay.
West to Dalyan
You'll leave Fethiye for the Göcek islands and Tersane, an island with the ruins of an abandoned village. Further west, a local boat from Ekincik can take you up the reed-lined Dalyan channel to Kaunos and its temple-fronted rock tombs. On the way back, Bedri Rahmi bay, named after one of Turkey's best-known painters, has the fish he painted on a rock there in 1974.
